The Tethyan and Tyrrhenian margin record of the Central Apennines: a guide with insights from stratigraphy, tectonics, and hydrogeology

This guide is a 5-day geotraverse across the Central Apennines, which expose inherited Meso-Cenozoic sedimentary successions and tectonic architecture of Apennine Tethyan passive margin. structure was progressively involved into orogenic post-orogenic tectonics, related to Tyrrhenian back-arc dynamics. To show different margin dynamics, we present: 1) sedimentologic stratigraphic aspects, 2) relations with Neogene compressive Quaternary extensional structures 3) hydrogeological case-study. The trip starts north Rome, where deposits at transition from marine continental deposition, including travertines, record evolution excursion then moves Mesozoic platform margins Latium-Abruzzi Apulia carbonate platforms, perfectly preserved Cretaceous occur. Maiella mountain Gran Sasso range testify for production changes, as recorded in facies associations isotope geochemistry records, global climate shifts regional tectonics.
